This year in fifth grade STEM, we will hopefully cover these topics (time-dependent):
Conceptual/visual understanding of multiplying and dividing fractions
Students will master varying diagrams to show multiplication and division
Students will write equations for situations that use multiplicationa nd division
"Best Buys, Rates and Ratios" takes the big ideas of unit rates and ratios and puts them in an everyday setting
Hands-On Equations Level 3 which covers algebra with integer operations
Our MASSIVE STEM bridges unit will teach:
review our understanding of structures and stability from our fourth-grade structures unit
use mathematical modeling to explore bridge design, structure and function, as well as to develop a decision model to help determine the appropriate location and types of bridges
graph points in x/y coordinate plane and use a plot of these points to analyze data
from hands-on models and investigations of various bridge types, organize data and write/solve linear models to make predictions that will inform decision making
generate and solve linear equations in a real-world concept
know and be able to apply the Pythagorean theorem
use the PT to find the length of support cables in a cable-stayed bridge
learn about the various bridge design types and apply the understanding to make decisions
design and build a prototype bridge that fits within the constraints and budget of the project
test and reflect on the final bridge
We will use Turing Tumbles to practice logical thinking!
We will also continue our practice with and assessment of problem-solving strategies using CML (Continental Mathematics League).
