This year in second grade LAH, we will hopefully cover these topics (time-dependent):
Our first unit will utilize short stories, folktales and fables to teach us how to think deeply as we read. We will practice our discussion skills and will learn how to respond to academic questions in writing. Students will explore the deep connections between culture and folktales, as well as practice finding the moral and connecting it to their own lives. We will hopefully have time to practice our own storytelling to share with family members.
We will move into non-fiction/informative text next using a great unit from Junior Great Books called "Think It." Think It will require students to creatively analyze the text using a three-read process that ends with applying their thinking to a new situation.
We will then move into a novel study of the beautiful text, "The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane." Throughout this unit, students will be exploring character development and growth. They will practice vocabulary strategies and practice responding to text in writing.
