One Word Wednesday, Take Flight Thursday, and Friday Bowling

Students "chalked up" the sidewalks around school with their ONE WORDs on Wednesday. Students created paper airplanes to test on our Take Flight Thursday spirit day. 4th Graders went bowling on Friday as a special P.E. trip. Check out the fun!

Venn Diagrams in Math

Students in my Math class have been learning about different polygons. We compared and contrasted various quadrilaterals based on their attributes.

V.I.P. Day!

What an amazing afternoon we had on April 12th! Our classroom was overflowing with special classroom guests, and we had such a great time getting to know them. My favorite piece of sage advice from a visitor was, "Always think before you act." Ask your child about other wise words, as well as differences between the world back in their day versus today.

APRIL PRIDE! Awards

Did your child share that we had two PRIDE! winners from our Homeroom for the month of April. Not only did I announce the winner for Empathy, but we had the Encore Exclamation winner as well! I also had the privilege of choosing a winner from my Math classroom for Positive Attitude.

Museum of Science & Industry Field Trip

4th Graders visited the Museum of Science & Industry on April 26th. They enjoyed the various exhibits, with some favorites being the hatching chicks, the submarine, and mirror maze.

March PRIDE! and Our PTO Auction Winner for Lunch with the 4th Grade Teachers

Check out our PRIDE! Award winner for Determination in March. Also, our classroom had the winner of the PTO auction prize of Pizza and Popsicles with the 4th Grade Team. An added bonus was eating outside to enjoy the sunny weather!

Future Actors and Actresses?

The students worked on fluency, intonation, and expression while following the stage directions in the play we read, Catch Me If You Can. Each student had a role to play, and they performed in front of their classmates. I was so impressed by their desire to bring in simple props and really do their best with their parts!

February PRIDE! Winners

These are our PRIDE! winners for the month of February. We had the Encore Exclamation winner along with the award for Improvement in our classroom.

Valentine's Day Fun

Our party helpers planned a great time for our classroom. Students made a craft, solved some word puzzles, enjoyed some tasty treats, and more.

Wind Turbine Design Teams

Students worked in collaborative groups to design a wind turbine. Their challenge was to build a turbine that met as many of the following criteria as possible in the time given: blades spin, blades can spin in low and high winds, and blades can spin when wind is blowing in different directions. Ask your young engineer if their turbine met any of these criteria!

Week of January 30th

Mrs. Csorba helped us cite our sources for our descriptive writing about amazing animals. In Math, students plotted fraction and decimal equivalencies on number lines. During Science, students worked like engineers to design wind turbines. It was a busy week in 4th grade!

PRIDE! Awards

Take a look at all of our PRIDE! Award winners so far this school year. It is always difficult choosing just one student for these awards, but it I guess that is a good problem to have! Congratulations to our winners!!

Our Week Leading Up to Winter Break

We enjoyed our different Spirit Week days, as well as a special Tivoli Theater trip to see The Grinch as a whole school.

Fourth Graders also participated in a Holidays Around the World activity to learn about several winter holidays. I hope your student shared some highlights with you during the break!

Veterans Day Assembly and 1st Snowy Recess

Our Veterans Day bulletin board honored many veterans from our Prairieview community. Our special assembly was attended by several close friends and family members who are veterans, too.

We were excited to spend some time in the snow on our first wintery recess in November!

Halloween Happenings!

Students had so much fun celebrating Halloween with a classroom party and school-wide costume parade. Here are some great snapshots from our afternoon!

Oct. 14 ELA Word Sort Activity

Students were challenged to sort their list of short and long -e words in different ways. Small groups had to work together to decide how to sort into 2, 3, 4, and then 5 word groups. There were some clever categories, such as number of syllables, types of vowel teams, and number of letters in the words.

Sept. 22 Math Activity

Math students worked to find the total surface area of a variety of rectangular prisms, all having the volume of 24 cubic units. They used unifix cubes to help them model the math, but were then challenged to figure out a formula for finding total surface area using just the dimensions given for length, width, and height!

Week of Sept. 5th

Students worked together to create simple electrical systems in Science. Their challenge was to build a system that would cause fan blades to move. If successful, their next challenges were to find a way to cause the fan to spin slower and faster, and make the fan spin the opposite direction.

Students also met with Amira. She is an online virtual tutor, part of our new "Into Reading" ELA resource. Ask your child about reading to Amira!

Week of August 22nd

Students worked cooperatively to solve some tricky puzzles to open various digital locks in a School Daze "Breakout". Ask your child to tell you about the experience!

Students also chose their ONE WORD and wrote it on a rock to make is a "solid" commitment to live it this school year. What is your child's ONE WORD?
