Mindfulness
This school year we started our journey together learning about mindfulness!
This school year we started our journey together learning about mindfulness!
What is Mindfulness?
Definition: Mindfulness is being fully present and aware of your body, breath, emotions, and thoughts with an attitude of curiosity, openness, and acceptance. (CCSD59 definition modified from the Morale & Mindfulness Committee, Breathe for Change, and various sources)
Each person has their unique interpretation and definition about what mindfulness means to them. Additionally, mindfulness looks different for every person. It may look like listening to a particular song or type of music, it may be a walk, it may be centered breathing, it may be a mindful movement, running, gardening, playing an instrument, etc. Mindfulness allows an individual the opportunity to stop, take a moment, and to be fully present in order to positively regulate their own breath, body, emotions, and thoughts.
Mindfulness is also equitable for all people, it is accessible anywhere & anytime, and is free for all.

Preparing for our Mindfulness Journey:
We talked a lot about only being able to control what we think, feel, say and do.
We can NOT control other people, nor many things in our environment.
We talked about the importance of listening, participating, taking risks and reflecting when working as a class, in a small group and independently.
Students are encouraged to take risks and participate in new and sometimes uncomfortable activities. If a student chooses not to participate, that is fine, but that student must be respectful during that class time to allow for those around them to participate.
Our class definition of mindfulness:
Why Mindfulness?
We did some research in small groups:
We discovered that mindfulness can lead to:
The BRAIN and Mindfulness
Mindfulness - Focus on Sound
Mindfulness - 3 Collective Breaths
Mindfulness - Self-Talk
What messages doe we tell ourselves?
School Quotes:
Our Quotes:
Pink:
House Arrest - Book Study
Mindfulness - Taking a Test
How can mindfulness affect our test scores?
Mindfulness & Art
Mindfulness - Gratitude - The Brain
Mindfulness - Happiness Challenge
How is GRATITUDE related to HAPPINESS?
After reading and learning about happiness, we decided to implement what we learned. We participated in some challenges from the Happiness Challenge, started a Gratitude Journal, and even wrote special Thank You Letters to people we are grateful for.
Vision Boards - Goal Setting
We ended 2022 by writing letters of gratitude to people we care about. We started 2023 by thinking about our VISION and GOALS for the new year! We also talked about how to live in the present, even though you may have some long term goals.
2023 Vision Board
2023 Holiday Gift - Positive Self-Talk
2023 Goals Essay
Book Study - So B. It
Before break we also finished a book study and learned a lot about the main character and how the main character practices mindfulness and gratitude.
New Year = New Strategy
We plan to spend a lot of time in 2023 on the HEART Strategy!
We will use Mrs. Frank's book and template as a guide as we learn
to Respond to events and Transform our lives!
Health - We spent our first week back practicing the 5 Step Moment to reflect upon our Body, Breath, Emotions and Thoughts. This is only the first step of the HEART Strategy.
Environment - We spent our second week back focused on our Home and School environment. We reviewed some research on how our environment affects us both physically and mentally and also discussed the why/when/how to change our environment when necessary. Students were challenged to change our classroom environment to improve their response in class and transform their learning.
Affirmation - We spent our third week back focused on affirmations and positive self-talk. We researched how affirmations affect the brain and the benefits of using them. Then we created a list of affirmations and positive quotes in our mindfulness journals.
Response - We spent our fourth week back focused on the most IMPORTANT step - RESPONSE!!! We reviewed the parts of the brain and focused a lot on Amygdala Hijacking. We are learning how to use Steps 1-3 (Health, Environment, Affirmation), as well as our 5-Step Moment, to guide us into responding when confronted with situations in life. We watched videos and took notes on our own triggers, as well as ways our individual body responds to stress. We know that our RESPONSES can and will TRANSFORM our future.
Transform - We have been talking a lot about how our response to a situation transforms our future.
Positive Response = Positive Consequences
Negative Response = Negative Consequences
We are analyzing real life examples to understand how a person's response led to (transformed) a future consequence or action.
**We will continue to refer back to the HEART strategy continuously!**
