Our first reading unit will be a book study. The students will read the classic novel, Frankenstein. They will work with a small group of peers to discuss and study a variety of literary elements and practice different reading strategies.
The students will work on posing and answering questions in their group during reader's workshop. Additionally, they will develop their ability to respond to others’ questions and comments with relevant observations.
The students will study 28 academic vocabulary words that will be embedded throughout our curriculum, as well as the content areas (math, science, and social studies). They will be encouraged to use these words when they are speaking and in their writing.
Our first writing unit is informational writing that focuses on big ideas with specific details to support them. The final product will be a companion book. This is like a bonus book that gives reader's answers to questions they had about the book, or gives reader's more information on interesting things from the book.
