How to Make a 3D Model Easy to Print
You have probably seen something that was 3D printed and might have wondered, "How was that made?!" In short, a 3D printer melts long "strings" of plastic called filament using a really hot nozzle called an extruder. As the 3D printer moves the extruder around, thin layers of plastic are built up to create an object. Check out the video to see a 3D printer in action!
How does the printer know what to do? The printer uses computer code to tell the extruder how to move and where to put the melted plastic. That code is created based on a model that someone designs to represent the object that they want printed. The picture below shows the steps to make an idea into a 3D printed object.
What is Tinkercad?
You will be using a piece of computer software called Tinkercad to create the models for the objects that you want to print. Tinkercad is just one example of CAD software that can be used to make awesome 3D designs. CAD stands for Computer-Aided Design. Your computer (and Tinkercad) will help you create your design quickly and easily once you learn a few of the basic tools included in the software.
