Many of you may already know me but if you don’t, let me introduce myself. My name is Kalyn Knudsvig and I am the school counselor here at Pronghorn Elementary. I am so happy to be part of this school and the Gillette community. I grew up just down the road from here In Buffalo, WY where I graduated from Buffalo High School in 2002. I ventured out to Oregon in 2006 where I ended up residing in a small coastal town for the past decade. I became a property manager shortly after moving there and realized that was not where my passion was. In 2011, I started working for Seaside High School as the counseling secretary and registrar which led me to find where my passion was. It was through that position that I decided to become a school counselor. As I worked in the school, I attended Clatsop Community College in Astoria, Oregon with studies in Early Childhood Education prior to transferring to Grand Canyon University to receive my Bachelors in Science in Psychology. In 2014 I attended Oregon State University to receive my Masters in School Counseling. I was licensed as a PK-12 School Counselor by the Oregon Teaching Standards Board and worked as a School Counselor in Seaside High School for 3 years before deciding to come back home to Wyoming, making sure I would be close to those Big Horn Mountains. I am currently licensed as a PK-12 School Counselor through the Wyoming Professional Teaching Standards Board.
When I am not at school I love to camp, hike, travel, and spend as many summer days as I can by the water. I enjoy listening to music and believe it can be a release for our feelings and emotions. If you happen to see me out driving, you might get the opportunity to see me singing at the top of my lungs in my vehicle. I am often up to try new things and love adventures. I have practiced with dragon boat racing teams while in Oregon as well as being on a practice team for roller derby. I am still discovering what hobbies I may like as I have been in school and working for so long it left little time for much more. I am interested in learning to play the guitar as well as crocheting. Outside of deciding what hobbies to take up, I spend my free time with my dog, Remington, and visiting family in Buffalo. I have a second dog, Ruger, who decided that he wasn’t up for moving to the cold at his old age of 12 and decided to stay with family in Oregon where he is very happy and comfortable. I get to visit him and I get lots of pictures.
This is my first year working as an elementary counselor and I am enjoying every minute of it. There are some changes in working at the high school level to being at the primary level, but no matter what age, kids are continuing to grow, seek independence and build relationships. I love what I do and am lucky to be working with your children.
