March is a month of growth. As we (hopefully!) begin to see signs of spring, we’re reminded that growth doesn’t happen overnight — it happens through steady practice, perseverance, and encouragement. That’s exactly how math skills develop. This month, we invite families to look for everyday math moments at home — cooking, shopping, building, planning schedules — and turn them into quick conversations. A few minutes of math talk each day makes a big difference.
This month, our Tigers are sharpening their math thinking! Across grade levels, students are building fluency, reasoning through problems, and explaining their thinking. Below are quick snapshots of what mathematicians are working on in each grade — plus simple ways you can support at home.
Focus: Counting, number recognition, and comparing quantities
Students are practicing counting to 20, recognizing numerals, and understanding “more” and “less.”
Try this at home:
Count snacks, toys, or steps together.
Ask: “Which pile has more?”
Practice writing numbers in shaving cream or sand for hands-on fun.
Focus: Addition and subtraction within 10
Kindergartners are solving story problems using objects, drawings, and number sentences.
Try this at home:
Use small items (cereal, buttons) to model simple problems.
Ask: “If we had 7 apples and ate 2, how many are left?”
Focus: Addition and subtraction within 20; place value
Students are learning strategies (making 10, doubles, number lines) and understanding tens and ones.
Try this at home:
Practice math facts during car rides.
Ask your child to explain how they solved a problem — explaining builds strong math brains!
Focus: Addition and subtraction within 100; money and time
Second graders are building accuracy and flexibility with two-digit numbers.
Try this at home:
Count change together.
Have your child help calculate time: “If practice starts at 5:30 and lasts 1 hour, when will it end?”
Focus: Multiplication and division concepts
Students are developing fact fluency and understanding multiplication as equal groups and arrays.
Try this at home:
Practice skip counting (by 2s, 5s, 10s).
Turn facts into quick challenges: “What’s 6 groups of 4?”
Focus: Multi-digit multiplication and fractions
Fourth graders are solving larger problems and building fraction equivalency understanding.
Try this at home:
Compare fractions at dinner: “Is 1/2 bigger or smaller than 3/4?”
Ask your child to teach you how to multiply a large number — teaching deepens mastery.
Focus: Decimals and fraction operations
Students are adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing decimals and fractions with precision.
Try this at home:
Use shopping ads to compare prices and calculate totals.
Ask: “If something costs $3.75 and I buy two, how much will I spend?”
Focus: Ratios, rates, and early algebraic thinking
Sixth graders are solving real-world problems involving proportions and expressions.
Try this at home:
Double or halve a recipe together.
Ask: “If 3 notebooks cost $6, how much does one cost?”
Math is more than getting the right answer — it’s about reasoning, perseverance, and confidence. Thank you for partnering with us to grow strong, capable problem solvers. Our Tigers continue to show Tenacity and Responsibility as they stretch their thinking every day.
