The 2021 National Women's Soccer League’s (NWSL) Rookie of the Year, Trinity Rodman, is dominating in the soccer world. Rodman was the youngest drafted player ever in NWSL history and she won the 2021 NWSL Championship with her team, the Washington Spirit. At 19 years old, Rodman has already made history in women's soccer.

On February 2, 2022, Rodman signed a $1.1 million, 4 year contract with the Washington Spirit. This contract solidified Rodman's spot as the highest paid player in NWSL history. Rodman earned this honor after completing her stellar rookie year, bringing the first championship to Washington, being named US Soccer’s Young player of the Year, and making the United States Women’s National Soccer Team roster.

Rodman is making huge strides in the world of women's sports. Many women soccer fans were surprised to hear she landed this contract, earning her more money than players who have won the World Cup and Olympic medals. Previously 2x World Cup Champion and Olympic Bronze medalist, Christen Press, was the highest paid athlete in the league, signing a $700,000, 3 year contract with Angel City FC. Many soccer supporters wonder if Rodman should be the highest paid athlete in the league after only playing for one year.

Although the average compensation for the top ten male Major League Soccer (MLS) players is $4.3 million, Rodman is paving the way for future athletes. Many women choose not to continue their athletic careers after college, because of the low pay many women athletes receive. Women athletes are often forced to work two or three additional jobs to support themselves financially. Hopefully, we will continue to see women making gains in their fight for equal pay in the male dominated world of athletics.
