Social Media or the Real World: The Choice is Yours

I walk into the Main Cafeteria and see many kids of different ages and appearances. Maybe they’re athletes. Singers. Writers.  No matter what, there is one commonality: these students are always on their phones. 


Notification rings–and the first instinct is to pick up your phone. 


Your friend snapchatted you. Let’s look at what he sent. Haha, that's a funny face. You can’t get enough of the hilarious meme that he sent. You proceed to show everyone what your friend sent you.

While you’re at it, you check on your recent Instagram post. Only 203 likes? You think it’s not enough and you hope that TikTok will cheer you up. 


You then spend the next 30 minutes scrolling through short clips of people making fools of themselves. Toxic? Maybe. Interactive? For sure. Why are people so glued to their devices? How can one app take away so many hours of our time? Social networking manipulates the minds of teenagers to keep scrolling, to keep looking for the next best thing. Companies attract their clients to the point of addiction. Family time? Garbage. Going outside? Never heard of it. Many become absorbed in this little screen and drawn away from everyday life. 


Let’s admit it. Some will argue that social media provides an outlet for interaction between those who are disconnected physically, allowing for the spread of new ideas. Instantaneous posts from news sources provide us with the latest on sports, politics, pop culture, and health. 


It is crucial to understand the pros and cons of these social media platforms that grant access to the big world we live in and its wealth of information. What are the negative effects that should be frowned upon, and the positive effects that should be focused on?

Well, there you go! That’s a quick summary of the pros and cons of social media. But to be honest, it's all in your hands. Social Media or the Real World? The choice is yours…
