Let the Games Begin!

Looking for something new to watch? You’ve probably already heard of the most trending show in the world right now, Squid Game! For the past month or so, it has been a buzzing topic all over social media. From theories about the complex meaning of the story, to unique art of the characters, the show has excited many people and left an impact on them. It certainly deserves a spot in your “shows to watch” list!

What is it about?

Lost and living in a state of poverty,  the protagonist Gi-hun desperately looks for a way to improve his life. Being one million won (the unit of South Korean money) in debt does not help his case. He unfortunately resorts to getting his money from gambling and other illegal means. On top of his crumbling profit, his daughter is being taken away to the United States of America. He feels as if there is nothing that can save him.

On the way home, he meets a strange man on the subway station. The man offers Gi-hun money for the most bizarre reason: playing a kids’ game. Thinking it is a joke, Gi-hun ignores him. But eventually he begins to play the game. What will the future have in store for Gi-hun? The show follows his adventures as he attempts to make enough money to pay off his debt. It’s a wild ride for our hero, as well as for the viewer.

Is it worth watching?

Squid Game covers very dark and complex themes, such as poverty and grief, and is definitely for a more mature audience. These concepts are interesting to people because they shed light on problems that many may relate too or want to learn more about. It might not fit the vibe of some people’s typically favored television shows, but if you enjoy shows that leave you in suspense and fear, then you should definitely tune in. Be aware, though, that the show is rated Mature for a reason.

I really enjoyed the aspect of suspense covered in the show. Every scene had me at the edge of my seat. Certain moments seemed predictable, but then suddenly something unexpected happened. The show leaves you with a lot of questions that make you want to watch more.

Squid Game’s cinematography is very aesthetically pleasing, so anyone who is interested in film production will enjoy watching it. The colors, setting, and decorations used in the sets add to the uniqueness of the Squid Game world. It feels as if you are watching a different society. Its art also sets it apart from other shows. Some panels reference famous drawings, such as The Scream and Relativity. And Squid Game is a wild adventure--deeper topics are explored throughout the series, and symbolism can practically be found everywhere throughout the show, which influences different theories critics have about the show.

There’s a lot to admire. Another one of my favorite parts of Squid Game is the well developed characters that have a story behind each of their motives. Every character is introduced in a way where you can sympathize with them, and I even grew attached to a lot of them. It’s interesting because the characters aren't completely evil and they aren't completely good, making the show feel more realistic. They all have their own struggles. For example, Gi-hun struggles with finances while another character, Sae-byeok, struggles with her family. Throughout the show you can see the characters develop and discover new ideas on their ever changing lives.

Squid Game is definitely worth watching because it leaves an impact on you! It opens your eyes to many things that are wrong in society and will definitely make you think of the world in a different light. If you’ve already watched Squid Game and loved it, another show that is similar in appeal is Alice in Borderland, also on Netflix. And if you’ve watched that as well, take heart in the knowledge that Squid Game has been renewed for a second season--creator Hwang Dong-hyuk will be working on the second installment of his hit series. We may have to wait a while, but it will be worth it if season 2 is anywhere as good as the first season.
