COURSE DESCRIPTION
THIS YEAR WE WILL BE LEARNING BASIC SPANISH VOCABULARY SUCH AS: SCHOOL VOCABULARY, COLORS, NUMBERS, DATES, WEATHER, FAMILY, FOOD, ANIMALS, HOME VOCABULARY, TIME, ADJECTIVES, PLACES, DIRECTIONS, QUESTIONS, LIKES AND DISLIKES, AND CLOTHES. WE WILL ALSO LEARN MANY REGULAR AND IRREGULAR VERBS. WE WILL LEARN THE TENSES AND CONJUGATIONS OF THESE VERBS, AS WELL AS, CORRECT SENTENCE STRUCTURE AND AGREEMENT.
COURSE OBJECTIVES
WE HAVE FIVE MAIN OBJECTIVES FOR THIS CLASS. THE FIRST IS TO COMMUNICATE IN A LANGUAGE OTHER THAN ENGLISH. THE SECOND IS TO GAIN KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING OF OTHER CULTURES. THE THIRD IS TO CONNECT WITH OTHER DISCIPLINES AND ACQUIRE INFORMATION. THE FOURTH IS TO DEVELOP INSIGHT INTO THE NATURE OF LANGUAGE AND CULTURE, AND THE LAST IS TO PARTICIPATE IN MULTILINGUAL COMMUNITIES AT HOME AND AROUND THE WORLD. MATERIALS
YOU WILL NEED A NOTEBOOK FOR THIS CLASS TO KEEP ALL OF YOUR NOTES AND PAPERS.
GRADING
DAILY GRADES COUNT 40% OF YOUR GRADE. YOUR DAILY GRADE IS MADE OF WORKSHEETS, ORAL PRESENTATIONS, WRITTEN PARAGRAPHS, AND ALL REVIEW WORK DONE BEFORE THE UNIT TEST.
TEST GRADES WILL ALSO COUNT 40% OF YOUR GRADE. A TEST WILL BE GIVEN AT THE END OF EACH UNIT (USUALLY ONCE A WEEK).
I GIVE A PARTICIPATION GRADE EACH NINE WEEKS THAT COUNTS AS A TEST GRADE. TAKING NOTES, DOING ORAL ACTIVITIES, AND PARTICIPATING IN ALL CLASS ACTIVITIES COUNTS TOWARD THIS GRADE.
STUDENTS WILL BE REQUIRED TO WRITE PARAGRAPHS AND DIALOGUES USING THE SPANISH THEY HAVE LEARNED. THEY WILL ALSO BE REQUIRED TO MEMORIZE AND SAY DIALOGUES , SO THAT THEIR PRONUNCIATION CAN BE TESTED. THESE WILL SOMETIMES COUNT AS DAILY GRADES AND SOMETIMES COUNT AS TEST GRADES DEPENDING ON THE AMOUNT OF WORK INVOLVED IN EACH INDIVIDUAL PROJECT.
THE MID-TERM WILL COUNT AS 20% OF EACH STUDENT’S GRADE. IF THE STUDENT HAS TO TAKE THE FINAL, IT ALSO WILL COUNT 20% OF THE OVERALL GRADE. IF STUDENTS ARE EXEMPT FROM THE FINAL, THEIR DAILY GRADES WILL COUNT 50% OF THE SECOND NINE WEEKS, AND TESTS WILL COUNT THE OTHER 50%.
CLASS WORK AND MAKE-UP WORK
I EXPECT CLASS WORK AND HOMEWORK TO BE TURNED IN ON TIME. I WILL COUNT 10 POINTS A DAY OFF FOR LATE WORK. AFTER ONE WEEK A “0” WILL BE GIVEN FOR THE ASSIGNMENT. WHEN STUDENTS ARE ABSENT, THEY HAVE 5 DAYS TO TURN IN THEIR EXCUSES, BUT ONLY 3 DAYS TO COMPLETE THE WORK THEY MISSED. (IF THE ABSENCE IS UNEXCUSED, THE STUDENT WILL RECEIVE A “0” FOR ANY MISSED WORK.) AFTER 3 DAYS, I WILL COUNT 10 POINTS OFF A DAY FOR LATE WORK, AND AFTER A WEEK, A “0” WILL BE GIVEN FOR THE ASSIGNMENT.
PROJECTS
YOU WILL BE REQUIRED TO DO TWO MAIN PROJECTS. YOU WILL HAVE A FAMILY TREE PROJECT. YOU WILL MAKE A POSTER OF A FAMILY AND LABEL EACH FAMILY MEMBER IN SPANISH. THIS CAN BE YOUR REAL FAMILY OR A PRETEND FAMILY LIKE THE ADAM’S FAMILY. YOU WILL ALSO DO A PROJECT ON A SPANISH SPEAKING COUNTRY. ( I WILL ASSIGN THE COUNTRY YOU DO.) YOU WILL DO A REPORT, PRESENTATION, AND A VISUAL (POSTER OR POWER POINT) ON THE ASSIGNED COUNTRY.
