Eastern View High School's chapter of the National Honor Society is open to eligible students. Students do not apply to NHS for membership, nor is membership automatically conveyed simply because a student has a specific level of academic performance.
Students must meet the following requirements to receive a Candidate form & letter as a prospective member:
-Currently be an enrolled junior or senior at Eastern View High School
-Student must hold a 3.3 UNWEIGHTED GPA. A student's GPA does not "round up."
-Questions concerning a student's GPA should be directed to the student's counselor.
-Must be currently taking (or have taken) Biology (or higher science) and Algebra II (or higher math)
Candidate letters and forms will be distributed to students VIA STUDENT EMAIL providing instructions on how to fill out all forms as well as a due date for all materials. Letters and forms are given those students who have met the academic criteria to be considered for membership.
Candidate forms are assessed objectively by an anonymous Faculty Council to ensure that prospective candidates meet ALL four pillars of the National Honor Society.
Candidates are assessed on scholarship, service, leadership, & character. As such, the Faculty Council is looking for specific examples of each pillar on the submitted Candidate forms. Examples can be found here.
Approved candidates receive notification of their approval and are invited to an Induction Ceremony. Students must then accept the offer of membership to the local chapter & RSVP to the Induction Ceremony.
Candidates MUST attend an Induction Ceremony to transition from a candidate to a fully fledged member of the local chapter of the National Honor Society.
New, approved candidates/members must also pay dues of $30 for their first year of membership.

What if I submit my forms and I don't get selected for membership by the Faculty Council?
Unfortunately, sometimes not all students are selected by the Faculty Council for membership. We understand that this can be very disappointing; however, the Council must look at all four facets of the National Honor Society in making their decisions.
If a student is not selected for membership they will receive a letter via email informing them of this decision. After receiving the letter informing them of the non-selection, students will have one week to contact both advisors and set up a meeting to discuss. Students will have the option to invite their parents to also attend the meeting. Meetings will last anywhere from five-fifteen minutes. Appeals to the Faculty Council's decisions are handled on a case by case basis following the meeting. Faculty Council decisions will not be discussed via email as things have the potential to be misinterpreted via email. Non-selection meetings will not be with the Faculty Council, who remain anonymous, but with the advisors who will relay the Council's decision and explanation for non-selection.
Finally, we commend you on your successful efforts so far, in particular your academic accomplishments, and encourage you to continue your hard work in hopes that rewards and recognition will continue to come your way in the future.
If you are a junior, provided that you maintain your commitment to scholarship (maintain a 3.3 unweighted GPA), you will have the opportunity for membership in the fall of next year.

What if I'm selected for membership but I don't want to do it anymore?
Students are not required to accept the offer to become a member. Should a student obtain an offer for membership and not wish to become a member, the students must simply note that on the Intent form included in the letter and return it to the advisors.

Is there only a certain number of candidates that are selected?
No. Any student who meets all four pillars of the National Honor Society and are approved by the Faculty Council will be invited to become a member of NHS. There is no "set number" of members for each chapter.
**********
I was a member of National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) in middle school. Am I automatically eligible to join NHS?
No. NHS and NJHS are separate entities with different requirements for membership.
**********
Can I join NHS via the national office/website?
No. All decisions regarding membership in NHS chapters are handled at the local level.
**********
If I transfer schools, does my NHS membership transfer with me?
Yes, if you provide a letter from your former principal or chapter adviser confirming your membership—though you must meet your new chapter’s standards within one semester to retain your membership
**********
Are homeschooled students eligible for NHS membership?
No. However, students enrolled in schools part-time who meet the requirements for initial review may be eligible for membership, if chapter bylaws permit.

Is NHS the same as NSHSS?
No, National Honor Society is entirely separate from NSHSS (National Society of High School Scholars). NHS is a legitimate charter through the connected school system, while NSHSS is separate. If a student receives an invitation to NSHSS, it does not mean they are invited to join Eastern View's NHS chapter.
