Policies

Students in the Honors Institute at Salem Church Middle will be held to the highest academic, behavioral and attendance standards to ensure success in our program. Students in Honors Institute are expected to consistently abide by the standards outlined below. If students are not upholding the standards, they will be placed in provisional enrollment status. If students do not improve, they will be removed from the program.


Academic

Academic Standards

  • Maintain Honor Roll Status (3.0 GPA), No D’s or F’s.
  • Subject to a strict 2 day late policy for Homework
  • 25% off per day for 2 consecutive school days, after 2 days the assignment is a zero
  • Quality and timely, completion of a yearly Summer Project based off of the summer project rubric

Academic Provisional Enrollment

  • Duration of 9 weeks. Students meet with an advisor weekly to carry out the action plan*. Students must improve grades on the next report card to be removed from provisional enrollment. If students are placed in provisional enrollment status for 2 consecutive quarters, they will not be invited back into the Honors Institute the following year.


Behavioral

Behavioral Standards

  • Students are expected to maintain ALL school and classroom procedures, upholding the school culture of respect at all times.


Behavioral Provisional Enrollment

  • The following administrative consequences will result in the student being placed in provisional enrollment status.
    • 2nd administrative after school detention
    • In-school detention
    • An out of school suspension (1-4 days)
  • The following administrative consequences will result in the student being placed in provisional enrollment for the remainder of the school year and the student will not be invited back to the Honors Institute the following year. They will be placed in regular Honors classes instead.
    • 2nd out of school suspension (1-4 days)
    • Out of school suspension (5-10 days)
  • Administrative consequences reset each school year
  • Duration of 9 weeks. Students meet with an advisor weekly to carry out the action plan*. If another administrative consequence is given during provisional enrollment status, the student will not be invited back to the Honors Institute the following year.


Attendance

Attendance Standards

  • All make up work completed as assigned within 6 school days of return (County Policy)
  • Students who reach the county limit of unexcused absences will be placed in provisional enrollment status


Attendance Provisional Enrollment

  • Duration of 9 weeks. Students must meet with an advisor weekly to carry out the action plan*


*Students placed in provisional enrollment status will participate in a parent-teacher-student conference to fill out an action plan to solve the problem. Students are required to write a letter addressing the causes of the issue and solutions discussed in the action plan. If the probation is not resolved after 9 weeks, then students will be removed from the Honors Institute in the following school year. If removed, students may not re-apply to Honors Institute.
