Students will take the CPH (Certified Professional Horticulturalist) exam in their senior year to show proficiency in the curriculum they have learned over the two years in the program at CCST. The certification is recognized within the industry as a way to to "raise and improve the professional standards of the nursery, landscape, and garden center industries by giving special recognition to individuals who have demonstrated a high level of competence in the principles and practices relevant to these industries".
Curriculum will be covered regarding pesticide application for private residences. This is the entry level license through the Maryland Department of Agriculture that allows certified private applicators to buy and spray restricted use pesticides on their property. Students will not be able to use this license to start their own "commercial spraying operation", however within the landscape and farming industry those students who graduate with this entry license are highly valued applicants who often start with a higher pay grade and can often skip over mandatory training sessions since they already hold their license. After holding a private pesticide license for two years graduates can then apply to take the commercial pesticide applicators exam.
All students at the Cecil County School of Technology will be trained and receive certification (must pass) before they graduate. Usually, Natural Resources students take this during the beginning of their senior year.
