The GEO Group made over 2.2 billion dollars last year. Instead of paying employees a fair salary to do custodial work inside the facility, they minimize costs through their “voluntary work program” and pay detained individuals $1 per day to clean the dormitories.

MISTREATMENT

“We’re tired of being mistreated by GEO staff.”

LOW PAY

“We’re paid $1 a day for our work- that’s less than 1% of the minimum wage.”

LIVING CONDITIONS

“We are held in unsanitary and unsafe conditions which have been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic.”

HIGH COSTS

“We’re sold overpriced commissary items which are often expired”

RETALIATION

“When we started our strike guards retaliated by taking away our entertainment inside detention: the xbox, movies and arts and crafts”

RETALIATION (cont.)

“Some of our comrades have been sent to solitary confinement as retaliation for participating in the strike.”

FOOD CONDITIONS

“We’re served unhealthy food which is sometimes rotten and moldy.”

CLOTHING QUALITY

“We’re constantly being issued old, torn and unserviceable or stained linen and clothing.”

8 DEMANDS FROM LABOR STRIKERS

  1. That all detained individuals are treated with respect and dignity by all GEO officers

  2. Increase the number of volunteer workers to 12 and increase worker salary to CA Labor Law minimum wage of $15 per hour

  3. Proper health care provided to all detained individuals: have a doctor on site, be referred to outside specialists promptly, and offer preventative health care like providing sunscreen in the summer.

  4. Better quality food, proportioned servings, properly cooked meals, properly washed fruit given at every meal. Hot water available during all meals.

  5. Maintenance: We request GEO to fix and sustain livable conditions in the facility, & to always have potable water available throughout the facility.

  6. Reinstatement of in-person visitation at the facilities by 06/16/22 and free virtual visitation so everyone has an equal opportunity to see their loved ones.

  7. Clean, higher-quality linen and clothing better suited for the climate

  8. Provide us with personal hygiene items: razors that don’t give razor burns, shaving cream, deodorant, dental flossers and better quality toothbrushes.
