Year 8 Language Careers Event
On Friday, our Year 8 students took part in an online Language Careers Event to discover where learning a second language can take you in the working world.
We heard from the following four guest speakers:
Fernando Bartolomé Usieto – Education Attaché at the Embassy of Spain
Simon King – Headteacher of the Bilingual Primary School in Brighton, who spoke about using languages to set up the school and partner with international communities
Peter – Economic Adviser at the Department for Business and Trade, who talked about using Japanese and German in his work
Olena – Ministry of Defence, who shared how Spanish, Ukrainian, and Russian help her in her role with military safety
Both students and teachers really enjoyed the session. The speakers gave us a lot to think about, explaining how languages help us view the world differently and build strong critical thinking skills—something that is vital as AI becomes a bigger part of our lives.
The speakers also reminded us that most people around the world grow up speaking more than one language, encouraging our students to look beyond just speaking English and see where languages could take them in the future.
