In this unit, students will explore how and why atoms bond together to form the substances we encounter every day. Students will connect what they learned about atomic structure, valence electrons, and the Periodic Table to predict how different elements interact with one another.
Throughout the unit, students will investigate ionic and covalent bonding, determine how electrons are transferred or shared, and use element properties to predict the types of bonds that will form. Students will also learn how bonding influences the properties of compounds.
