School is back in full swing, and we couldn't be happier! This first full week of school we welcomed our little dragons back in to the LC and they couldn't wait to get their hands on their favorite books! We're looking forward to a great year!
September turned out to be a very busy month in the Learning Commons! We kicked off our school-wide reading of The Wild Robot by Peter Brown. All throughout the month, teachers read the book aloud to students, there have been trivia questions on the morning show and students have completed activities independently and as a class for display. We can't wait to start the sequel, The Wild Robot Escapes!
We had a few very special visitors from Harlem High School who came and read to our first grade and kindergarten students. They loved it!
Our school is currently working towards STEAM certification. Our first PBL day of the school year, 3rd grade used the LC to spread out and create their animal adaptation creatures.
We saw many students for reviewing before posttests using the Goosechase app!
August 2019 Welcome to a brand new year!
We kicked off our school year in the LC with 3rd-5th graders using their creative brains to build and create structures, create stopmotion videos, draw and fold origami and enjoy all of the learning experiences OSMO has to offer!!
August 2019 One School One Book
We are so excited to participate in this reading initiative this year! Our first OSOB choice is The Wild Robot by Peter Brown. Homeroom teachers are reading the story aloud in their classrooms in grades K-5. Activities are completed in the classroom, trivia questions are asked on the morning show for prizes, and this week a challenge was issued including the Engineering Design Process. It has been so much fun listening to all ages talk about Roz and her adventures!!!
August 2019 NCE's Little Free Library is officially open!
NCE’s Little Free Library is officially open! A Little Free Library is a “take a book, return a book” free book exchange. Anyone may contribute or take books. The more the merrier! If you take a book (or two) from a Library, you do not need to return that exact book. However, in order to keep the Little Free Library full of good choices for everyone, the next time you swing by the Library bring a few books to share. Little Library book exchanges function on the honor system; everyone contributes to ensure there are always quality books inside. This way, we all win!

August 10, 2018 4th Grade Book Tasting
Mrs. Eargle's 4th Grade classes joined us in the Learning Commons for a little Book Tasting. They got to "taste" the different genres of chapter books they can check out this year. I loved hearing "I want to check this one out TODAY!"
August 20, 2019 "First Lines" with 3rd Grade
Today, our 3rd graders came in to participate in the "First Lines" activity. I ran across this fun activity on Andy Plemmon's blog. We had chairs and benches set up in front of each shelf of books and the students spent a minute and a half in front of each section reading as many 1st lines in the different books as they could. Many students left with long lists of book they were interested in checking out!
