The Visual Arts program at Riverside Middle follows the Georgia Standards for Excellence in Visual Arts, and ensures that all students, not just gifted or talented students, are involved in the comprehensive study of the Visual Arts as a part of their general education. The approach to instruction engages the student in higher order thinking through the avenues of:
• Art History: encountering the historical and cultural background of art
• Aesthetics: discovering the nature and philosophy of art
• Art Criticism: making informed judgments about art
• Production (Art Making): creating or performing
Goals:
•To identify and utilize the Elements of Art & Principles of Design
•To create works of art by exploring a variety of media and techniques
•To develop an appreciation and respect for the arts
•To analyze, evaluate, and form critical responses towards art
•To demonstrate proper, safe, and respectful use of art tools, supplies, and resources in the process of
art-making
Resources:
Slides, art visuals (prints, student examples, etc.), videos, selected online resources, Art reference books & Art technique guides
Columbia County Grade Weights:

‘ASSIGNMENTS’/Formative Art Exercises/Activities

*PLEASE NOTE: The Visual Arts class at RMS is designed so that the student who has had a limited art background experience can reach success in the class. A student’s grade is not solely dependent on artistic ability, but they must put forth effort and follow the guidelines of each concept we will be studying. If a student is absent, additional time will be given to finish. Missing and Incomplete assignments will negatively impact a student’s grade, so it’s important that each assignment is completed and turned in by the deadline posted/announced. Students are encouraged to ask questions and seek help from me, Mrs. White, throughout the quarter. I’m eager to help ALL students REACH success and ENJOY Art Class at RMS!
Supplies Needed for Art Class:
*Students are expected to bring two No. 2 pencils with erasers to class each day (block erasers are best) and a sketchbook.
*All 6th grade students should bring an empty cereal box during their first week of Art class.
*All 8th grade students should bring a handled gift bag during their first week of class (can be recycled) This will be used to transport their fragile clay project.
Make up Work:
On the day of the student’s return to class, it is their responsibility to check with Mrs. White for any work missed, to receive handouts, and to turn in any work that was collected during their absence. The Art room is available to students who need to come in and work on art projects. Students can come on Tuesday AFTERNOONS 2:30-3:00pm. Students will need to pick up a hall pass from the Art room, prior to the day they would like to come in.
Art Club:
All interested students are encouraged to apply for the Art Club! Students can pick up an application from the Art room. All Art Club applications are due to Mrs. White on or before August 19th. More information can be found on the application itself and on my website coming soon. Please email me with any questions!
