I am a 6th grade math teacher at Greenbrier Middle School in Evans, Georgia. I started working in education as a volunteer in classrooms in Reno, Nevada. After graduating from the University of Nevada, Reno I student taught in the Washoe County School district. My first teaching position was a special education resource position working with students with special needs at Elizabeth Lenz Elementary School. Later I taught third, fourth, and fifth grade there. I spent one year teaching sixth grade as a stand alone teacher, teaching all subjects at Huffaker Elementary School. After moving to Georgia I was hired as a sixth grade math teacher here at Greenbrier. This starts my thirteenth year in teaching and my sixth year teaching math at Greenbrier. I have loved every part of my teaching journey but my heart is truly in math education.
I received my undergraduate degree from the University of Nevada, Reno in Elementary and Special Education. I received my master's degree in Mathematics Education in 2016. This year I am finishing my Specialist Degree in Education.
I believe strongly that mathematics learning should focus on developing an understanding of the concepts through problem solving. I ensure that students have many opportunities to solve real world math problems through exploration. I do my best to blend the learning so students can make sense of the mathematics with varied strategies and representations, justify their solutions with reasoning, and make prior connections to knowledge and experiences.
