Egg Hunt Counting

Counting 5's and 10's together. Hide a combination of nickels and dimes in eggs. Hide the Eggs and then have your child find the eggs and count.

Vowel Sort

Search your back yard for objects in nature and then sort between the long or short vowel sounds

Spelling and Reading With Eggs

Write out words and cut up the letters, place the letters inside the eggs and hide. Have your child find the eggs and see how many words they can read and spell using the letters found in the eggs.

Syllable Hunting

Have your child hunt for objects in nature (or in your home) and sort them by the number of syllables the word contains

Creating Patterns

Have your child collect objects in nature to make patterns.

Hit the Target #

Give your child containers labeled 5,6,7,9,11,12,13,14, & 18 have them fill them with that numbers of counters (indoor or outdoor objects) and then have them select 3 or more containers to see if they can hit a target number you selected by adding those containers together

examples of outdoor counters: rocks, pebbles, pine cones, sticks, flowers, sweet-gum seeds, leaves, etc...examples of indoor counters:cereal, bottle caps, buttons, gold fish crackers, pretzels, etc...

Decomposing numbers

Create large pizza sized circles and write a number inside that circle greater than 20. Have your child put that many objects (rocks, leaves, acorns, etc...) inside the circle. Have your child group them by 10's and ones. Finally have your child write a sentence on paper or in chalk about their work.

note: have them line up or group the objects neatly by tens and ones to make counting easier

Silly Story Writing

Writing made fun! Finish this silly story (add additional story events and an ending). Your child can also use crayons, pens, colored pencils or paint to complete this activity. Just another fun way to encourage writing and practice spelling!

"Play" Grocery Store

Have students buy items individually by combining coins then challenge them at a later date to pick 2 or more items, add them together to get a total price and have your child count out this amount with their money.

Egg Hunt Sight Words

Write sight words on cut up pieces of paper or index cards. Hide the sight words in the eggs. Hide the Eggs and then have your child find the eggs and read.

Beginning Sound Consonant Blends

Find objects in nature and label their beginning sound or consonant blend sound.

Sight Words in Chalk

Have your child practice writing their sight words in chalk or in the dirt/sand with a stick

Adding with Objects

Put different colored counters in eggs. Hide the eggs and then have your child find the eggs and create addition sentences.

Counting Outdoors

Hand your child a deck of cards and have them go on a counting hunt.

Sight Word Crossword

Use your sight words to create a crossword pattern.

Using Nature to Inspire Writing

Have your child collect some objects in nature and write about them in chalk or on paper.

First Grade Concentration

Use these words or words you see your child struggling to read to reinforce decoding and reading skills. Create a memory/concentration game in which you mix up the cards, turn them upside down and take turns trying to make a match. Write the words on paper or index cards with a light colored marker or highlighter...these words are the kinds of words we were working with before we started the learn from home.

Acrostic Poetry

An acrostic poem is a poem where certain letters in each line spell out a word or phrase

Have your child write their name (first, last or both) and write words to describe themselves.

Ordering

Ordering: Have your child put all the items in order from least to greatest or greatest to least (see picture)

Comparing:

Start with just the "less than" symbol, then do "greater than" symbol another day, finally use both symbols once you feel they are confidently using the symbols in isolation.
