Students will have to be able to do the following for their writing quiz:

Be sure to:

Include a clear setting (where and when the story takes place).
Include 1–2 big events
Use descriptive details and dialogue.
Use transition words and phrases to show the order of events.
Add a clear closing.

1. Setting the Scene (Where and When)

Hint: Remind your child to describe what it looks like, sounds like, or feels like

2. Planning the 1–2 Big Events

Hint: Keep the story focused on one short scene rather than trying to tell a story about an entire thing

3. Dialogue and Descriptive Details

Hint: Encourage sensory details (taste, sight, motion) and exact character words in quotation marks.

4. Transition Words

Hint: Look for words that keep the timeline clear: First, suddenly, after that, finally.

5. Clear Closing

Hint: The ending should wrap up how the narrator feels after the event.
