Classroom Expectations
If your child has been a student in the Columbia County School System since Kindergarten, this will be their first year on a numeric grading scale. In K-2, students are graded on a standards based system - they are given a 3 for mastery of standards, a 2 for progressing towards the standard, and a 1 for not progressing at all. Please be aware that as we grade assignments this year, your child will receive numeric grades. The grading scale is: A is 100-90, B is 89-80, C is 79-73, D is 72-70, and F is 69 and below. They will also receive a numeric grade in science and social studies this year, where previously, they were given participation grades.
Retake policy on assessments: Your child has the opportunity to retake an assessment once per assessment. The retake must occur prior to another assessment in the subject and the retake grade will not be higher than a 90 in the gradebook.
Students are expected to gain mastery of content standards in reading and mathematics.
Students are expected to know their addition, subtraction, and multiplication math facts (0-10) before 4th grade.
Writing Expectations – Write at least 1 paragraph with appropriate introduction and closing for the following genres: informational, opinion, and narrative.
STEM Expectations: Engage in activities that require engagement in the Engineering Design Process (Ask, Imagine, Plan, Create, Improve, Present).
