Master of Education (M.Ed.) in Curriculum and Instruction, concentrating in Secondary Education -Spanish
Dear Students, Families, and Guardians,
Welcome to 2025-2026 school year!
¡Bienvenidos!
My name is Mrs. Southerland, I was born and raised in Puerto Rico, where my passion for languages, cultures, and lifelong learning began. I am deeply enthusiastic about traveling the world, discovering new cultures, and learning new languages — passions I bring into my classroom to inspire and engage my students.
This is my seventh-year teaching Spanish I and Spanish II at the high school level. Every day, I strive to create a dynamic, inclusive, and supportive learning environment where students not only gain language skills but also develop a deep appreciation for the richness and diversity of the Spanish-speaking world.
I hold a bachelor’s degree in journalism from Puerto Rico, with advanced studies in Verbal Expression and Performance for Television and Film in Mexico City. I earned my Georgia Teaching Certification, pursued graduate studies in Clinical Psychology in Puerto Rico, and completed a Master of Education (M.Ed.) in Curriculum and Instruction, Secondary Education – Spanish from Augusta University. I am also a certified Gifted Education Specialist and Modern Language Arts educator.
As a bilingual educator (English Spanish), I bring strong communication skills, cultural sensitivity, and a deep respect for diversity to my teaching. I am an active member of The National Society of Leadership and Success and certified in Social and Behavioral Human Research.
It is truly a privilege to guide my students on their journey as language learners and global citizens. I look forward to an amazing year of growth, learning, and discovery at Harlem High School.
