BENEFITS OF PRIVATE INSTRUCTION
Private lesson teachers model a professional sound on their instrument.
How do babies learn to talk? By listening to people speak. In the same way, instrumentalists develop a characteristic and mature tone by hearing a strong, professional sound. A private instructor provides that model on a consistent basis.
Students perform weekly and receive focused, individualized feedback.
Performing regularly for a teacher helps students become more confident and independent musicians. In a one-on-one setting, students have the opportunity to receive detailed feedback, make adjustments, and continue working on a problem until it improves.
Students focus on supplemental exercises written specifically for their instrument.
These instrument-specific fundamentals are crucial for long-term development and for building the skills needed for more advanced playing.
Method books designed for each instrument are more comprehensive than band music alone.
Because of their structured and methodical approach, method books provide more thorough coverage of skills such as range development, key signatures, rhythms, duets, alternate fingerings, and musical styles than can typically be addressed in a full band setting.
District and All-State Band auditions can be approached on an individual level.
Private instructors are able to meet each student where they are, introduce audition material at the appropriate time, and help develop a personalized plan for preparation. This process also teaches students how to set and achieve both long-term and weekly goals.
Students have opportunities to perform solos they truly enjoy.
Lesson teachers are experts in literature for their instrument and can recommend solos that match each student’s ability level and musical interests. They can also select pieces that target specific goals, such as extending range, improving articulation, or mastering more challenging key signatures. With more options available, students are more likely to find music they connect with and enjoy performing.
Private lesson teachers serve as long-term mentors and role models.
While students move through different classes, grade levels, and schools, they may study with the same private instructor for many years. This allows the teacher to develop a long-term plan for the student’s growth. A private instructor can guide a student from their first sounds in beginner band all the way to performing advanced solos as a senior, providing consistency, motivation, and expert guidance throughout their musical journey.
