ALL students receive high-quality research based instruction in academic, behavioral and social emotional skills. Students are screened to identify those students not achieving benchmarks.
SOME students are not making adequate progress toward grade level benchmarks in core curriculum (approximately 20%). Small group supplemental instruction in addition to core instruction. Instruction, strategies and programs designed to enhance and support core instruction. Evidence based practices and programs have demonstrated to improve academic and behavioral performance in core (Tier 1).
FEW students need intensive support in addition to supplemental and core instruction (approximately 5% of students). Instruction customized to specifically meet the individual needs of students extending beyond core and supplemental levels of support. Progress monitoring is completed more frequently. Evidence based practices and programs have demonstrated academic and behavioral improvement in identified skill areas.
Tier I: If the water in the aquarium is dirty, it makes little sense to single out struggling fish for corrective treatment. The first corrective treatment that should be applied is: clean the water in the aquarium; all the fish will likely benefit from this action.
Tier II: After you have cleaned the water in the aquarium, you find you have two fish not thriving like the others. You would continue to feed all the fish and maintain clean water (Tier I). Additionally, you might treat those two fish with supplemental vitamins (Tier II). Those fish would get the extra care until no longer needed.
Tier III: You have maintained clean water and fed all the fish (Tier I), you provided supplemental vitamins for the two fish (Tier II), but now one of those two is still showing signs of distress. This fish would get specialized intensive care or medicine until it begins to thrive (Tier III) while you continue to monitor the above.
