ALHS PARENT INFO

CONTEST DAYS...WHAT TO EXPECT

-All contests sites will ask for a suggested $3 donation per visitor.

-We suggest arriving about an hour before your student's performance time to allow time for parking and finding the performance center. Sometimes, contests do run ahead and students get nervous if their parents aren't there yet!

-The performance schedule will be printed by category and title of the piece, not by students' name/school. Please know the name of your student's performance and their performance category so that the host school volunteers can help you find your student's center!

-Please do not wear school apparel to contest, per IHSSA contest rules. (The 2022 speech shirt is ok, as it doesn't identify our school!)

-Students are expected to dress professionally during their performance, but may be casually dressed the rest of the day.

-Performances will be scored by judges with a I, II, III or IV rating and will be given comments from the judge. If you have questions about scores, please see Ms. Aldrich or Mr. Waller.

-There cannot be any audio or video recording of performances of any kind without written consent from the state office. Should special circumstances arise, please see Ms. Aldrich or Mr. Waller to discuss getting permission to record.

-All contest sites encourage visitors to eat on site, in order to support the fine arts department at that school. We expect all speech team members to remain on site for the duration of the day and support the local school's fundraising efforts.

-Unless there are other student events conflicting with contests, we ask that students ride to/from contest on the bus with the team and that they stay at contest to watch all of their fellow ALHS performers, in order to build and maintain the spirit of the team. (Think of it like football or track...participants stay for the whole game/meet, they don't leave when their play/event is over.) It is our goal to foster a team that supports one another!

-The IHSSA recommends guests wear masks in performance rooms and hallways to keep speech events safe for all! (Performers may perform with or without their mask as they are comfortable)
