One of the greatest Mathematicians of his generation.
In 1936 he invented the idea of a universal computing machine
The idea was extremely clever mathematically, and a brilliant invention.
Alan’s idea was for a computational machine.
A stored-program computer that could run instructions in sequence in order to make things happen as output.
The computer had been invented.
Between 1939 to 1941 the Nazi regime had conquered and occupied mainland Europe.
Britain was alone, and under severe threat of invasion.
The German military encrypted (scrambled) all their communications with a machine called Enigma.
If you could crack their codes, you would know everything they were planning and doing.
One problem;
The encryption was considered to be unbreakable.
Mathematically, near impossible to crack.
In 1939 the British Government asked Alan Turing to work in a Top Secret military facility called Bletchley Park.
The aim was simple.
Create an electronic computing machine that could crack the Nazi codes.
Alan Turing and his team were a success.
They created an electronic computing machine that cracked the Nazi codes.
From that moment on, the allies knew the military plans/messages of the enemy.
The allies were now on a footing to win World War 2.... all because of Alan's machine.
At the end of the war, the Bletchley Park teams were disbanded and sworn to secrecy on how WW2 had been won.
However, Alan was keeping a secret of his own.
He was gay. A homosexual man.
At that time, homosexual acts were illegal in the United Kingdom.
In 1952 Turing was charged with "gross indecency" after admitting to a relationship with another man.
He was convicted and sentenced to chemical castration through hormonal injections.
Due to the huge physical and mental trauma of the chemicals being injected into his body...
... tragically Alan committed suicide 1954.
It is known that he poisoned an apple with cyanide.
The bitten apple was found at the side of his bed.
Does the apple remind you of anything?
