Shedeur Sanders is the son of former football star Deion Sanders. Shedeur always had pressure on him to be as good as his dad. He attended Jackson State University and then transferred to University of Colorado Boulder, where his dad took the head coaching job. He became the starting quarterback there and did fairly well. Shedeur earned the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award, BIG 12 offensive player of the year and First Team All-BIG 12 in 2024.
After his senior season, Sanders entered the NFL Draft many pundits believed he lacked the talent and mental discipline to be a first round selection. They cited his perceived cocky and arrogant reputation which could lead to coachability issues. It is also commonly believed that he holds the ball for too long which leads to sacks and loss of yards.
I think he possesses some positive traits, however. For instance, he doesn’t drink or party and is a gifted athlete with many positive physical attributes and an opportunity to make the most out of himself since his dad is Deion Sanders. He had good trainers and access to the top equipment when growing up.
I believe Shedeur Sanders, who was drafted by the Cleveland Browns in the 5th round and 144th overall pick, should get a fair opportunity at quarterback. He is a skilled quarterback that is clearly good enough to make it in the NFL, so he should be given a fair shot. I don’t think the 2-6 Browns are good, so they should spend this year finding themselves a star quarterback to compete with good teams in years to come.
Shedeur is a good quarterback because he is athletic, has a strong arm and has a high IQ. I believe he gets unfair hate just because he isn't as good as his dad. Comparing him to his dad isn't realistic since they don't play in the same era of football and play different positions.
I also believe he isn’t getting a fair shot because of what he said in the press. Shedeur stated, “We went from Jackson State to Colorado and changed two programs back-to-back. You don't think I could come to an NFL franchise and change a program again?" This led some to believe he was not a good fit for any team, which is ridiculous since he answered it out of confidence. Confidence is something that is in short supply in Cleveland, Sanders presence could change this quickly.
