a non-paid, one semester - 1.0 credit internship course that provides CHS students with the opportunity to learn and explore the teaching profession.
While you may not ultimately plan to become an educator, you will gain hands-on, real-world experience while you implement our district’s employability skills to develop the link between school and the workplace. As a student TA, you will:
have a greater understanding of workplace roles, functions, ethics and responsibilities relating to teaching
be better prepared to make informed career and college decisions
improve your time management skills
develop a network of future career contacts
Students will be able to:
observe and reflect in a pre-service assignment and project portfolio
reflect on the complex variables a teacher must consider when designing classroom setup, use of technology, and lesson planning.
observe the classroom environment and participate or contribute appropriately.
develop and enhance current employability skills through soft skills assignments and interactions with their mentor, faculty, staff, and students
practice email etiquette and write a thank you letter to their mentor
Please refer to this bell schedule for high school class period start/stop times.If the student is a TA during Block 3, student will eat lunch during their mentor's assigned lunch period.
Students assisting at the HS can use the RR period or after-school hours (typically 2:35 pm - 3:00 pm) to meet with you to discuss questions about the teaching profession and/or assigned tasks.
Students assisting at Sheckler or CMS are provided with 15 minutes for travel and arrival. Students must return to CHS before the start of their next class. All Block 3 TA's will eat Lunch A. The student will need to schedule a meeting time with their supervising teacher regarding questions about the teaching profession and/or assigned tasks.
For attendance purposes, email Ashley Schmidt or Carol Chorones if a student is absent by 3 pm. Please indicate the student name and block.
Introduce the TA to your students, explain their role, and why this student is a valuable resource for your course.
Provide the TA with a tour of your classroom (physical/virtual). Show them where to find resources so that they can assist you with minimal disruption to your classroom environment. Allow the TA to observe you interact with your students.
Answer questions and provide guidance about the teaching profession
Provide opportunities for the TA to gain hands-on learning experiences in the teaching profession and develop employability skills (see task suggestions below)
Complete two evaluation forms - one at the end of each marking period. Students are evaluated on the demonstration of the CASD Employability Skills (see image) You will receive an email with a link to the evaluation at the end of the marking period.
Arrive to their TA placement (in-person or virtually) on-time
Regularly communicate with you
Complete portfolio assignments (assigned by Ms. Schmidt) in Canvas by the due date for each marking period
Follow directions and complete assigned tasks (see suggestions below) provided by you
Be a role model to the students in the classroom through the use of employability skills
Maintain passing grades in all subjects
Sign passes
Work with confidential information (i.e. IEP, 504, Medical)
Grade anything subjective
Discipline
Answer parent emails/calls
Stay alone in the room without the teacher
Enter areas that are for faculty/staff only
Take attendance
Provide basic technical assistance and determine if there is a need to submit a tech request
Create digital content (i.e. design worksheets, Quizlets, review games, create a digital copy of a paper document, create a YouTube playlist) based on your content/curriculum needs
Create short instructional or demonstration videos based on the content/curriculum
Tutor individual or small groups of students
Research new tools/technology and make suggestions on how it could be implemented in your lessons
Lead review activities
Create/design classroom bulletin boards or websites
Record notes for students that are absent (create a review video, handwrite notes and upload a picture using Scannable, type notes)
Teach a portion of a lesson to the entire class under your supervision
Distribute/collect papers
