Service Opportunities

Outside Literacy Initiatives

One option for service is to volunteer your time in our community: working at the library, reading to patients in the nursing home or children's hospital, etc.

Here is a link to the form you need to confirm you activity.

Tutoring

While our writing lab is not ready yet, tutoring opportunities are. Plenty of students and teachers are needing assistance with tutoring. If you are interested, please complete the Google Form linked so we can schedule you as needed.

Book Drive

In March, we will begin our 2nd annual book drive. Last year, we donated hundreds of books. Start going through your bookshelves and thinking about books you would like to donate. We will accept board books and children's books all the way to high school appropriate books.

Thanksgiving Food Drive

Bring 10 items to count toward one service credit. Go to this link to get ideas for items to bring. It does not have to be canned food (examples: tin foil, plates, etc.). Deliver to McCole, Tollett, or Cosby by Nov. 15th to receive your credit.

Books With Santa

On December 3rd we will have Books With Santa in the Media Center between 2-4 pm. We will need volunteers to help with this and bring supplies.

Opportunities from the National Office

Common Read 2022-2023

All scholarship winners will be chosen based on their essay over a prompt connected with Beautiful Country.

They’ll post prompts in November, so you still have time to read the book.

Advisors have a few copies available to lend.

Flash Fiction

NEHS Writing Contest for 2022-2023

NEHS will continue to build on the success and popularity of the Writing Challenges we have promoted for the past three years. Participation in the writing contests over the past several years has far exceeded expectations; we are thrilled that so many students and advisors are submitting their work.

2022-2023 Genre

This year, we return to “flash fiction” as the genre. Writing submissions will be welcomed three times over the course of the year, starting with "six-word stories" this fall October 17 – November 21). Later in the year, longer submissions of 75 - 100 and 200 – 350 words will be accepted.

2019-2020 Scholarships

  • Merit Scholarship: The prompts for the Merit Scholarships have been published. NEHS members interested in applying for this category must have read the 2020 Common Reader, A Place for Us, by Fatima Farheen Mirza, and will then select one of the prompts with which to frame their analysis of the text. The application window will open December 9 and close on January 21.

  • Collegiate Scholarship: This is a needs-based scholarship for students who demonstrate outstanding academic performance in English, who have been active participants in NEHS, and who qualify for a collegiate award due to income and/or family circumstance. The application window will open December 9 and close on January 21.

  • Junior Summer Study Award: If you are planning on doing an English-related summer program which costs money, you may apply for this scholarship which awards up to $750 to 11th graders.
