"Matilda The Musical" is based on the beloved children's novel by Roald Dahl. It tells the story of an extraordinary little girl named Matilda, who has a brilliant mind and a vivid imagination, but is underestimated and mistreated by her family and headmistress. Despite this, Matilda uses her intelligence, wit, and a hint of magic to stand up for herself and her classmates, ultimately changing their lives.
Matilda demonstrates bravery by confronting the adults who mistreat her, despite being much younger and smaller. For example, when her father constantly berates her for reading books, Matilda doesn’t back down. She finds clever ways to fight back, such as swapping her father’s hair tonic for bleach. Another example is the iconic “Bruce” scene, where Matilda and her classmates encourage Bruce to eat the entire chocolate cake as an act of defiance against Miss Trunchbull’s cruel punishment. Matilda inspires the others to stand up to their fear, showing her leadership and bravery.
Throughout the musical, Matilda learns to assert herself and find her own voice, both literally and figuratively. One key moment is during the song “Quiet,” where she processes her emotions and begins to realize her power to control her destiny. Another powerful example is the closing number, “Revolting Children.” Matilda and her classmates collectively find their voices and rebel against Miss Trunchbull’s tyrannical rule, declaring that they won’t be silenced or mistreated any longer.
