Strategy: During instructional planning, use current mastery data (e.g., recent benchmark or progress monitoring skills data from a universal screener or current adaptive online tool report) for each reading skill to plan practice activities based on student-specific skills mastery.
Adaptive online tools provide structured grade-level and individualized skill practice to support mastery. However, their effectiveness depends on intentional use, monitoring, and support—they are not a stand-alone solution.
Onboarding Students ➡️ Set clear expectations.
Monitor Learning Progress ➡️ Teachers & students actively track progress.
Provide Supports ➡️ Ensure students maximize learning through
Motivational Supports to provide their best effort; and
Instructional Supports to help when their stuck.
Use a high quality online adaptive tool with an algorithm that advances students upon mastery of skills.
Follow recommendations for time and frequency provided by vendor to ensure appropriate progress.
Monitor students’ learning behaviors during the online work time to ensure students are engaged in learning.
For students who do not make progress with the online instruction, work with them directly (or provide peer support) until they are able to find success with online instruction.
