Congratulations!

Writing is at the heart of our shared academic enterprise. It is an essential skill and a flexible tool that generates questions, shapes knowledge, and inspires action. On this website, the Writing Program celebrates the many successes of Case Western Reserve University writers and writing instructors.

While the circumstances of this academic year have made it impossible to gather together for our annual recognition ceremony, we hope that this asynchronous tribute will stand in for a heartfelt, in-person celebration.

Please enjoy the congratulatory messages from Provost Vinson, Dean Ward, Associate Dean Whiting, and Professor Cowart. Then, learn more about each of our award recipients by following the links below.

2020-2021 Writing Program Essay Prizes

SAGES First & University Seminar Essay Prizes

The SAGES First and University Seminar Prizes highlight the best student writing produced in SAGES seminars each semester. Seminar leaders nominate student essays at the end of each course. These essays are reviewed by a committee of SAGES Teaching Fellows, graduate students, and SAGES administrators, who select several essays to recognize. The Writing Program works with the prize winners to prepare the essays for publication, and they are recognized annually at the Writing Program Awards. These essays provide a glimpse into the rich array of genres and texts that SAGES students create across many disciplines as they move through the SAGES sequence. This booklet contains the prize-winning essays from 2020-2021.
