In the beginning of 2024, CASDA announced that following six years in the position, Dr. Michael Piccirillo would be retiring from his role as the association's Executive Director. During his time at CASDA, the association embraced many changes and challenges, including: a move from the University at Albany East Campus in Rensselaer to the Main Campus at 1400 Washington Avenue; the COVID-19 pandemic, where CASDA shifted its program delivery model to online adult learning with several free virtual series; a mental health crisis among students, which led the association to venture into new program areas like SEL and MTSS; and stepping up recruitment of consultants to include those currently employed in school districts to maintain offerings that are relevant and practitioner-based.
In looking to fill the important role of Executive Director, CASDA assembled a search committee comprised of staff members, CASDA consultants, Executive Committee members and UAlbany School of Education representatives. Together, the search committee was responsible for reviewing candidate applications, developing interview questions, and conducting the first round of interviews. The process began in February 2024, and continued through April, with the final candidates being interviewed by the Executive Committee.
When considering who the ideal next Executive Director should be, the search committee sought a proven educational leader who could continue the growth and progress of the association and be defined by a leadership style that is reasoned, decisive and collaborative. They looked for an individual who could build coalitions and foster an environment of forward thinking, who could motivate others and communicate effectively, and who could take initiative and guide the evolving organization.
The committee was lucky enough to have a diverse selection of applicants to go through, and met with seven qualified and impressive candidates in the first round of interviews. From there, three applicants were chosen to advance to the final round of interviews, where finally one was selected for the role.
