In sixth grade we work on refining the skills learned as beginners. We continue to work on improving our tone, technique and ensemble playing. There are many opportunities for students to continue growing as individuals and as a group.
Seventh and eight grade band is combined and continues to expand on the musical knowledge and skill established in fifth and sixth grade. Combining the grade levels gives students the unique experience of having different roles to fill. The seventh grade students benefit from having the guidance and confidence of the eighth graders to look up to where the 8th graders are given a chance to explore different leadership roles within the group.
This group is a club that all band students in grades 6-8 are encouraged to consider joining. In this ensemble we explore styles of music beyond the traditional concert band setting. We learn about jazz, rock and pop styles, how performance techniques differ and the historical significance of these different eras.
As a full band in seventh and eighth grade we also form a marching band to participate in local parades and events. We also travel to a band competition where we perform in a parade with only bands from different parts of New York State. In the year we have participated we earned 1st and 4th place trophies in a variety of events.
Our color guard is open to sixth grade band students who are interested in getting a head start with marching band. This is made up of flag and rifle carriers during parades.
Flag twirling is also open to sixth grade band students. We learn how to twirl flags and perform routines with the marching band during parades.
