Kent Pittman joined the staff at East Carteret High School for the 2022-23 school year. Prior to coming to ECHS, he taught 6th Grade ELA at Morehead City Middle School for two years.  Before joining MCMS, he was the founding English teacher at MaST High School (Marine Sciences & Technologies) in Morehead City, North Carolina. He taught at MaST High School for two years and was part of the school's opening. This year is Mr. Pittman's 6th year teaching.

After the 2018-19 school year, Mr. Pittman was selected as Carteret County Public Schools' first Beginning Teacher of the Year. He was then selected as a Regional Beginning Teacher of the Year Finalist for North Carolina. Mr. Pittman attended NCCAT Cullowhee in Dec. 2019 for Developing Emerging Leaders in conjunction with the new Beginning Teacher of the year award.

In the classroom, Mr. Pittman believes educators should hold students accountable for their own learning while providing a safe environment with scaffolding to support their acquisition of new skills, content, and social and emotional development. Mr. Pittman makes purposeful decisions in regards to scaffolding and instruction from teaching pedagogies tied to Lev Vygotsky and socio-cognitive development. He prioritizes student talk and exploration of a subject. Mr. Pittman's classes strive to find a way to make the texts, content, and standards relevant to the students and help them form connections between the class and their lives.

In his classes, you see students working in small groups with scaffolding to formulate, answer, and discuss student and teacher-generated questions about texts. This philosophy centers around the student and allows them the freedom to explore and choose questions relevant to them at the same time, providing support, and a structured environment to explore new ideas, texts, and relevant topics.

Pittman is a graduate of East Carolina University with a Bachelor's Degree in Communication with a Concentration in Journalism and a Master's Degree in Teaching-Secondary English. He is licensed to teach middle and high school English.  While in graduate school, Mr. Pittman completed his student teaching at East Carteret High School and is a native of Beaufort and a 2011 Graduate of ECHS. He resides in Morehead City with his husband Ashton and English Bulldog Shoal.
