Mr. Humphrey

BIOGRAPHY

Ashton Humphrey is the director of choral and drama activities at Croatan High School in Newport, North Carolina. He is a member of The National Association for Music Education (NAfME), the North Carolina Music Educators Association (NCMEA), and the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA). Mr. Humphrey is the Music Literacy Chair and hosts the East #2/3 A Music Performance Adjudication for the NCMEA High School Choral Section. He frequently serves as an adjudicator for other Music Performance Adjudication sites across the state. Mr. Humphrey also serves as the Senior High Repertoire and Resources Chair for the NC Chapter of ACDA. He has taught at Croatan High School since 2015 and serves as Arts Department Chair.

Humphrey’s choirs have consistently received the highest ratings in performance and sight-reading at Music Performance Adjudication. Most recently, Mr. Humphrey's Vocal Ensemble was invited to perform at the 2022 North Carolina American Choral Directors Association Conference based on the outstanding quality of the ensemble. The CHS Vocal Ensemble also performed at the 2021 North Carolina Music Educators Association's Conference.

Each year, Humphrey's students participate in the NC Honors Chorus, ECU Choral Invitational, ECU Men’s Fest, Wingate 9-10 Honors Choir, and All-State Chorus.

In addition to choral excellence, Mr. Humphrey teaches two drama sections and produces and directs a fully-staged musical each spring.

Humphrey was the first recipient of the NC American Choral Directors Association's Choral Impact and Artistry award for his dedication and impact on his students and the choral art. He also won the NC ACDA Richard G. Cox Award for outstanding emerging choral director. He has also received the 2023 and 2025 Swansboro Rotary Excellence in Teaching Award.

Humphrey is a graduate of East Carolina University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education. He resides in Morehead City with his husband Kent and English Bulldog Shoal.
