World History: Ancient Civilizations

Carroll County's Middle School Social Studies Curriculum is designed to prepare all students to be active, responsible citizens of a diverse, democratic society in a larger global community. Throughout their social studies experience, students develop understandings of their community, nation, and world, and refine their critical thinking and problem solving skills. The course of study for students in the sixth grade is ancient civilizations, which is the study of early civilizations and cultures and how they developed in and around the great river valleys of the world. This course is designed to focus on the social studies themes of history, geography, economics, political systems, and culture. To learn more about CCPS's Social Studies Curriculum, please visit the Curriculum and Instruction Resources page on CCPS's website.

It is my personal belief that history is made more meaningful and relevant when presented to students through lively accounts of historical events and figures, and through active classroom activities and discussions. Regular attendance and classroom participation is essential to the development of students' deeper understanding of the content and academic success. Additionally, in order to peak student interest throughout the year, students are also encouraged to explore topics of interest more in-depth and provided with other sources to explore.

About Mrs. Conkling

This is my 15th year teaching sixth grade Social Studies. I have taught my entire career at Sykesville Middle School. I am very familiar with the great community here because I grew up in Carroll County and actually attended Sykesville Middle School as a student!

I am really looking forward to working with your child this school year while helping them to develop some new skills and interests in history and other cultures.

In my spare time I enjoy traveling to new places. I've visited a few of the places I teach about, so I can't wait to share with your child my experiences abroad and some neat things I've seen and learned along the way. I also really enjoy being outside and have recently started a quest to visit and backpack through our beautiful U.S. National Parks.
