Messenger's Messages

Welcome to the information site for Mrs. Messenger's English classes

Here you can find information about the current unit of study for each class as well as previous units. I will post links to information both parents and students need. I can always be reached via e-mail, but I hope that this site helps you as well.

About me

I hail from Texas, where I was born and raised in a community similar to Bowdon. I graduated from The University of Texas at San Antonio in 2007 with a Bachelor of Liberal Arts degree, and I have been teaching ever since. My career has given me experience through middle school reading and language arts, every level of high school English, multiple honors classes and has included electives like journalism.

My Family

We moved to Georgia from Texas in 2017 for my husband's career as a structural engineer. We have been married for over a decade, and have been blessed with three children. Our son is a 5th grader at BES, and our twin girls will join him there in Kindergarten.

Resources

Below you will find links to sites that we use regularly and some that could be useful resources on assignments.

IMPORTANT: You can find Mrs. Messenger's

Virtual Learning Contract here. This is required for anyone not learning in the face-to-face setting.

Important Links

During Premier Learning Days I am asking all students to complete the attached Virtual Learning Information form.

Parents, please complete the attached Parent Survey. We may not have a chance to really discuss your child and this class during the brief time we have together before school starts. This will help me gather any information I may have received in person during traditional open houses. Parent Survey

The Weekly Message:

Diving back in together

August 1, 2020

We are in unprecedented times. I want you to know two things as we start this year.

1) I care about you, and want the best for you, and most importantly I BELIEVE in the students at Bowdon High School.

2) I am here to teach you. That means I am trusted by the state of Georgia, the Carroll County School System, and Mrs. Evans to teach you the standards every Georgia high school student needs in the area of English and Language Arts in order to graduate and be equipped for their chosen future.

Having said that, please, know that I understand that learning from home is easier said than done these days. I know that at any given point your current circumstances will change. I know that there are times your internet may go out, you may not be able to get to school, or any other number of reasons.

I am here for you. I want you to be successful, and sometimes that means learning may be tough. But, I will give every effort to make it fun as much as it is challenging.

Here is what I need from you.

  1. Communicate. Talk to me when you feel overwhelmed, when you feel behind, when you feel bored because the rest of us are going slower than you would like, when you feel like I don't see you, when you feel like I am always focusing on you, when you love what we are learning, and when you hate what we are learning. Talking to you is the best way for me to understand how you are doing as a student in my class both with the material, but I also know that sometime other things may be getting in the way of that material for you and I won't know if you don't tell me. Do not wait until the last minute to talk to me about a concern you have before a deadline or test.

  2. Show up & try your best. When I schedule a class meeting be there. When we are in class. Stay awake. One thing I love about teaching English is that there is often more than one right answer. Do not be afraid to speak up. If something is preventing you from doing your best see number 1.

  3. Check every instruction before declaring that you do not understand. After 13 years of teaching I can tell you that 85% of the time I am answering questions about information I have already given.

  4. Be patient. Do this with me, this process, and yourself. This is all new to all of us. Let's be kind to one another and help each other.

  5. I BELIEVE IN YOU. This has to be said more than once. Each one of you is capable. Each of you has different ways of learning and something come easier for you than others. You are each unique, and I am excited to learn more about each of you. I know you can well in my class. Everyone is capable of learning in my class. I will meet you halfway, but you have to do the rest. Don't worry I will give you the tools to meet me there.

Conviction

If you walk away from my course this year with only one thing, I would hope it would be a purpose and conviction. It is not enough to have a voice, we all have one. We must know what we are trying to say and say it with purpose, pride, and conviction. My wish for you is to find your true, honest voice this year, and learn to use it.

This spoken word poem by Taylor Mali puts my hope for my students into a great expression, please watch.
