Our Transition Year students who have travelled to Madonna Di Campiglio, a discreet and elegant town nestling at an altitude of 1550 metres in the stupendous valley between the Brenta Dolomites and the glaciers of Adamello and Presanella, are enjoying the slops and importantly, lots of snow.
Madonna Di Campiglio, is today most certainly Italy’s number one ski resort as well as one of the most important resorts in the Alps.
Our 53 students have made huge progress on the slopes and are making the most of the final days of skiing. Apres-ski activities of ice skating, karaoke, marshmallow toasting and tobogganing have been a huge success. The students and staff alike are describing it as a trip of a lifetime. Thanks must be extended to staff members that have travelled; Mr Herlihy, Mr O'Donovan, Ms O'Sullivan, Ms Higgins and Mr Leahy.
Congratulations to our VEX robotics team who proudly represented CCS in the annual robotics competition in MTU on Tuesday 14th of January. A special thank you to Mr. Manning and Ms. O' Farrell for their ongoing commitment to this event.
While the team didn't place this year, they completed all tasks presented to a high standard. Well done to the team and teachers.
On Tuesday the 14th of January our Leaving Certificate PE class visited MTU Tralee as part of their course work. A huge thanks to MTU Tralee for hosting our LCPE 5th Year students for a varied, active and engaging day workshop. Our thanks to the teachers who travelled (Ms. O' Donovan and Mr. Moore) and who helped to make this such a memorable and worthy experience.
The last week of January saw the wonderful production of High School Musical, the result of months of hard work by the Transition Years. Opening night welcomed a full house of parents, students and the community, all of whom anticipated a great evening. What a wonderful spectacle it was. From the outset the audience was blown away by the talented singing and acting. Stand out performances included Aibhe Murphy as the glamourous 'new girl' torn between friend groups and Riley Trill as the outspoken captain of the basketball team.
Katie Knowles as the trouble making Sharpay Evans added just the right amount of excitement and danger to the performance making for a very entertaining evening.
The school show is an integral part of the school year and an opportunity to show case the school to everyone in the community. A special thank you therefore, must go to the following members of staff who made the entire event possible. Firstly Ms. Ciara Mullaney and Mr. Andrew McGrath the two directors. The set was designed and decorated by Ms. C Johnston and her team. Ticketing and the raffle were organised and delivered by Ms. P O' Driscoll, with Mr. A Nyhan on set construction. Event planning and organisation fell to Ms. G McGrath and Ms. N O' Donovan.
Three key students also stood out for contributing to the overall success of the event: Lydia Hunt and Maeve Lillis our choreographers and our very hardworking stage mananger, Bambou Fryzowski.
We look forward to many more school shows.
We wish our Transition Year students the very best of luck on their Work Experience. This provides students with a valuable opportunity to gain real life experience of the working world. We are very appreciative of all the local employers that are facilitating these placements. An essential part of assessment in Transition Year is that students return the employer review form from their work experience.

Updates and information pertaining to the running of the school
Every morning a significant number of students arrive late to school. Punctuality is crucial for your child's learning and also for developing life long habits.
Please make every effort to ensure your child arrives at school by 08.40.
Please review your child's school journal for late stamps to see the pattern of lates.
All lates to school should be explained by parents/guardians in the Vsware app.
Reports are now available on VSware for first, second and fifth year students following the completion of the Christmas Assessments. Please take the time to sit with your child and go through the report and teacher feedback.
Thank you to all involved in our school community for your cooperation with the new procedures in relation to the use of the intercom as notified in December (reprinted below). Already, this has resulted in a marked reduction in interruptions to teaching & learning in our classrooms.
There has been a growing number of visitors calling to the school requesting that students be called out of class over the intercom. The rate of these requests has reached a level whereby they are beginning to interfere with teaching and learning in the classroom.
As a result of the interruptions these announcements are causing to the smooth running of lessons, it has been decided that, outside of exceptional circumstances, we will no longer be calling students out of class on the intercom.
If a parent/guardian is collecting a student from school then arrangements need to be made at home in relation to the collection time and the student should go to reception in order to sign out at the appointed time. Collection times should, if at all possible, align with the daily school timetable in relation to when classes change.
If a parent/guardian is dropping class materials or other items which the student needs, these can be left at reception where the student can collect them at a break of class. When the student makes contact requesting an item(s) be dropped to reception they should be notified as to the time this will happen so that they don't call to reception before the item(s) has been dropped off.
Thank you to all parents/guardians and students for their understanding in implementing this change of practice which is necessary to limit interruptions to class time and to maintain the high standards of teaching & learning in the classroom which we are accustomed to at CCS.
Once again, we would encourage as many families as possible to pay the student activity fee and we thank all those families who have paid the fee already.
Click on the easypay link EASYPAY or simply call into the office .
Reminder: Please note that from January there will be a minimum charge of €5 for all students travelling by bus to any school event (including sporting events / matches). This fee may be increased depending on the event destination and duration.
The pre exams started on the 31st January for the sixth years and on the 4th February for the third years. Please note that there is a cost for doing these exams as the papers have to be purchased and the sixth year papers are sent out for correction.
The cost is €50 for students in third year and €100 for students in sixth year. Payment can be made on Easy Payments Plus carrigcs.ie/payments/
The school will subsidise the cost of the exams for students with a medical card. If a student has a medical card the cost will be reduced to €20 - in this situation please bring the medical card and money to the main office.
We would appreciate payment by the end of January if possible. Thank you.
Thanks to all parents/guardians for your engagement with the VSware app. By using VSmail to contact parents and guardians rather than sending an SMS we have saved €2700 since September in comparison to the same time period last year. Please ensure notifications are turned on for the VSware app on your phone.
Installation of Solar panels
The school has partnered with Verde Energy Group, a company with a base in Little island, to make a significant move into renewable energy. Verde will be installing 114 solar panels on a section of the school roof over the next few months. This project will significantly reduce the school’s electricity costs as well as supporting sustainability within the school.
As an added bonus, we were delighted to discover that one of our past pupils, Daniel Marnane, is the Energy Engineer with Verde for this project.
The schedule of activities (matches/speakers/assessments/outings etc) is available on the school website for parents/guardians to view. This is updated each week.
