Purpose

"Scholarship for Service"

The California Scholarship Federation honors outstanding students for academic achievement each semester, and encourages community service. This club meets regularly and democratically adopts a community service project such as visiting local retirement homes, writing letters to veterans or patients at Oakland’s Children's Hospital, creating appreciation baskets for local police or firefighters.  CSF members are also encouraged to peer tutor Carondelet students in need of academic help.

Types of Membership, Application Process, and Eligibility

Students are invited at the beginning of each semester to apply for membership during the club's two week membership drive.  Announcements for membership are published in the weekly Carondelet e-Newsletter as well as daily Schoology announcements.

Incoming frosh who have a CJSF certificate and freshman can apply for associate membership.  Eligibility for lifetime status begins with the second semester of a student's sophomore year.

CSF's motto, "Scholarship for Service" is the foundation of the Lifetime Membership with Service designation.  This special designation was established with the spring semester of 2018.

Life (Sealbearer Membership)

Seniors who have been members for at least four semesters between their sophomore and senior years (one required from senior year), qualify for Lifetime distinction. These seniors wear a gold tassel at graduation, receive a gold seal on their diploma, receive Sealbearer distinction on their final transcript and a CSF pin.

Seniors who have volunteered  for at least five hours during each semester of membership will also qualify for Sealbearer WITH Lifetime of Service. These seniors will receive the gold cord in addition to the gold tassel to be worn at graduation.

Life (Sealbearer Membership) 100%

Seniors with six semesters of membership and service (beginning with their sophomore year) will receive the full compliment of awards and the Highest Honor Certificate (100%).

History

The California Scholarship Federation, Inc. is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to recognize and encourage academic achievement and community service among middle and high school students in California. There are approximately 1500 chapters in middle school and high schools throughout the state, and each chapter is comprised of students members who meet eligibility requirements. Each chapter is led by a staff adviser.

The idea for a state-wide organization to honor outstanding high school students was first proposed by Mr. Charles F. Seymour at a convention of high school principals in Oakland in 1916. Mr. Seymour was then vice-principal of National City High School in San Diego County, and in 1916 he had organized a scholarship society on his campus, modeling it after one already established at Long Beach Polytechnic High School. No action was taken on his proposal at that time.
