Teaching about Conflict and War
It is generally a topic suitable for the very senior classes (5th and 6th Classes) and one which needs teacher thinking time and planning. It is a very worthwhile theme to teach and links perfectly with Global Citizenship Goals and the revised LT curriculum plans.
This is also useful for questions that your class might have about the current conflict in Gaza (November 2023)
A Three point guide to Palestine and Israel-If you read one thing about the conflict in these areas, this is the one. Written by Development Ireland and so useful for you as a teacher and a human being!
Discussing War with Young children from the National Youth Council of Ireland. Though this was written in response to the war between Ukraine and Russia, every point applies to conflict in general. Really good, short, snappy tips for staff here.
Tree of Justice from Concern-This resource is absolutely brilliant! It is a Tree of Justice centered around human rights abuse and global justice in three countries, Somalia, Palestine and Guatemala. It gives you your lesson plans and videos/powerpoints.
Finally, Educate Together put a Guidance letter (March 2022) together for all schools when Russia invaded Ukraine in which they outlined strategies in discussing conflict in schools. It is also excellent and a quick one to read.
