This curriculum is taught to each grade level by Mr. Potter, our Elementary School Counselor. If you want more information about our guidance lessons, or desire to view guidance materials beyond what is provided on the website, please reach out to Mr. Potter at 903-861-3612.
Topics include, but are not limited to:
Self-Awareness
Self-Management
Social Awareness
Relationship Skills
Responsible Decision Making
Bullying Prevention (David's Law)
Play it Safe
(Elementary Anti-Victimization Curriculum)
Play it Safe is an Evidence-Based Child Sexual Abuse Prevention Program. It consists of age-appropriate lessons and corresponding videos for each grade level, Kindergarten through 5th grade. Students are empowered with tools to respond to uncomfortable situations using the 3-part safety rule. This safety rule can be applied to many situations that students may encounter on a daily basis, such as bullying and online situations, peer pressure, or exploitation by friends/family. The safety rule encourages assertive responses, whether it is used with strangers or someone the child knows and loves. Written parental consent is required for students to participate in this lesson.

Suicide Awareness/Prevention (8th Grade): Students participate in a 5 week course for Youth Awareness in Mental Health (YAM). For school districts in Northeast Texas, the program curriculum is facilitated in person by the YAM team from the Robert M. Rogers Department of Psychiatry at UT Tyler School of Medicine. The course does not contain any type of student screenings, surveys, or activities that assess mental health. Studies show that YAM reduces new cases of suicide attempts and severe suicidal ideation by approximately 50%.
Various art projects to encourage positive school climate and empathy for others are also incorporated into our lessons. If you want to see examples of our art projects or materials beyond what is provided here, please contact the Secondary Counselor - Mrs. Eckles at 903-861-0040.
