Phonics

FROM INFANTS TO PRIMARY - The place of phonics in the English language classroom

How can / should we teach phonics?

  • Phonics programs (Jolly Phonics / Yo Yo phonics)?

  • Natural incorporation of phonics into classwork?

RECOMMENDATION: EACH SCHOOL SHOULD HAVE A BASIC PLAN (SKELETON) OF WHAT WILL BE COVERED EACH YEAR.

REMEMBER THAT THE CHILDREN ARE ALSO LEARNING TO READ AND WRITE IN SPANISH, SO COORDINATION IS KEY.

Years 1-2 (recommendations)

  • Revision/introduction of all phonemes (sounds)

  • Match the sounds with the most common grapheme(s)

  • Basic blending and segmenting of words

  • To identify and copy some tricky / high frequency words and other common words related to topics.

  • Begin to learn difference between letter sounds and letter names

  • Notice alternative spellings (fly, pie, night, mine...)

  • Split digraphs (the magic 'e')

ABOVE ALL, CHILDREN MUST BE ENCOURAGED TO ENJOY BOOKS AND BE INTERESTED IN LEARNING TO READ AND WRITE.
