4K Celebration
of Learning
Welcome! Please browse the links below to check out some of 4K's learning across subjects in homeroom this year.
Math
In 4th Grade math, "big picture" concepts are:
- Rounding big numbers
- Multi-digit multiplication & division
- Measurement
- Fractions
Students learn a variety of strategies for skills they are taught, and there is a focus on critical thinking, problem solving, and number sense. Growth mindset and perseverance are also necessary aspects of 4th grade math!
In the FlipGrid link to the left, 4th Graders show their knowledge of one of the concepts above in a short video!
Reading
Reading Response
4th Graders read to learn through daily "jots" or written responses, focusing on their ideas about characters, setting, problems, and theme for fiction and main ideas, supporting details, and summarizing for non-fiction.

Writing
Narrative
At the end of the year, students wrote fantasy stories, focusing on developing their characters, setting, and plot.
Expository
At the end of the year, students wrote a research essay about a Famous Californian.
Persuasive
This year, students wrote a persuasive letter from a turkey's perspective and an essay about a topic they had a strong opinion on.
Social Studies
4th Grade social studies focuses on California history. We center our curriculum around working to understand multiple perspectives. One of the best ways for students to engage in perspective taking is through hands-on activities. Our time-tested 3-day "hands on history" field trip to Coloma allows students to experience the different sides of the California Gold Rush, and our on-campus Walk Through California "field trip" engages students in role play to experience California history across centuries. Photos of both of these stand-out social studies events are in the links below!
Social-Emotional Learning
In 4th Grade, students:
- Discover and develop their own identity
- Continue developing growth mindset
- Learn about the brain and how brains work differently
- Understand what they need to learn best
At the end of our "Brainology" unit, students created their own "Learning Toolbox" to explain what helps them learn best. Click the link above for student examples!
