Summer Reading Assignment
2022-2023
Students will read the following selections:
All students will read George Orwell’s Animal Farm. There will be a test and essay associated with the novella in the first-second week of school.
All students will select ONE of the following novels to read:
○ Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice
○ Charlotte Bronte’s Jane Eyre
○ George Orwell’s 1984
○ Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World
After reading the selected novel, students will develop a 1500 minimum word analytical essay on the main character and his/her development throughout the novel. Your focus should be what is the ultimate lesson or revelation for the main character and then on how the character reaches that epiphany or understanding. You may examine how other characters affect choices, how the person’s character/personality affects choices and outcomes, and, obviously, how the conflicts and actions of the story affect the outcome. You may use up to TWO critical sources for the essay, and I encourage you to use at least one. Again - this is the Proquest login and password:
