Parents and Guardians should sign-up HERE. You can view class assignments, get emails from all teachers (especially in music for field trips, concerts, etc.) and see current grades in all classes. The observer is Canvas' name for parent and guardian access.

Sign-up for REMIND

We are excited to share that the Newhart M.S. Band & Orchestra program is rolling out Remind for all music students and their families! If you're not already familiar with Remind, it's a classroom communication tool that makes it easy to stay involved with your child's music program, especially information regarding field trips and performances.

Remind is free to use, and you'll be able to get and send messages on any device—even a simple text from your phone!

HOW TO SIGN-UP
You can join a class or school to receive Remind messages via text, email, or push notification (or any combination of these).

TEXT

• Join by text - Participants text your class code to the Remind phone number 81010.

MOBILE APP

• Download the mobile app for iOS and Android devices and create a new account (or log in if you already have one.) To join a class, tap the + by Classes Joined and join with your class code or search for your class. You'll automatically get app notifications.

EMAIL

• Join online - Visit remind.com/join and enter the class code and your email address.

• Join from your inbox- Send a blank email to code@mail.remind.com. (If the class code were @math, for example, you'd send a blank email to math@mail.remind.com.) You'll get a response with more instructions.

PARENTS & GUARDIANS CAN HELP GUIDE MUSIC LEARNING

Even if you don't know much about music! ;)

Regardless of musical background, a parent's support and encouragement will have a tremendous impact on a child's progress in instrumental music.

To assist in the musical growth of your child, you can:

• Support the goals, policies and procedures of the music program and the teachers.

• Sign-up for Canvas as an observer to view your child’s current grades throughout the year and to receive the emails and updates from your Newhart teachers, including the music teachers.

• Require regular practice at home. Students should try to practice every day. Daily short concentrated efforts are more productive than trying to cram it all in on the weekends.

• Provide a daily time and place where your child can practice without distractions or interruptions and free from electronics. Encourage the use of a metronome, tuner, listening to recordings or watching quality YouTube’s are highly effective as part of a musicians development. Combined Metro-tuner or phones/computers with free apps are available.

• A musician will have a more quality practice by sitting in a good chair (for proper posture) and use a music stand (wire or regular).

• Ask your child to play for you and encourage performance.

• Help him/her to be on time to performances & rehearsals.

• Enthusiastically attend all music functions to show your support.

• Get involved! Consider joining the Newhart PTA!

• Help keep your child's instrument in good repair and with the proper supplies.

• Give consideration in providing private lessons for your child for extra support.

  • Woodwind reeds
  • Orchestra replacement string sets
  • Any supplies listed on the Supply List for Instruments (no music stands please)
  • Post-its
  • Ream of Astrobrite paper, any color(s)
  • Expo dry erase markers, chisel tip (larger sizes, not fine point)
  • Duct tape rolls - any color and/or pattern
  • Blank white address labels for printer (30 per page, 10 per page, 6 per page)
  • Pencils
  • Ziplock bags (Gallon, quart or sandwich)
  • Prizes for rewards (Candy bars, musical toys, stickers, etc.)
