In science class students are working to design a Green Island with minimum carbon footprint. Students are using math skills to calculate the per/person carbon emissions for various diets, housing and transportation options. Their finished project will be a map and a business proposal for developing their island.
Students conducted interviews at local businesses in Portland and South Portland. Students learned about making pizza and ice cream, about how bakeries source their ingredients and how the second hand clothes industry is eco-friendly.
Students are beginning to conduct interviews for the Global Trade podcast project this week. Students who are focusing on seafood participated in a field trip to Luke's Lobster. All students had the opportunity to hear a presentation from Curt Brown of Ready Seafood about the role of global trade in the Maine lobster industry.
Students learned about the low and high tech tools meteorologists use to predict the weather. We learned about the role of meteorologists in protecting people and the economy from weather-related disasters.
Students in science class used friction to generate an electric charge on a balloon. They then observed how that electric charge acted like a magnet in attracting oppositely charged materials such as cereal crumbs and even a stream of water.

It was great to see so many parents and community members at our celebration of learning. Students shared their business proposals and infographics related to the resources in the Gulf of Maine.
Students had the opportunity to hear from business owners and entrepreneurs in various Blue Economy roles such as Sea Bags, Ready Seafood and Luke's Lobster. Students shared their own project ideas and received feedback from our panel of professionals.
On Wednesdays we have a block of curriculum time that we call Project Time. This is a chance for us to blend our science and social studies curriculums and focus on project-based learning. This week we took a deep dive into seaweed. Students looked at plankton under the microscope and identified different types of seaweed. They also did seaweed pressing.
In science and social studies we are building towards a project based on Gulf of Maine resources. We call this project Blue Economy. On Wednesday we went out to Kettle Cove to begin an exploration of the local ocean ecosystem.
Students on the Kaufman/Kerr/Moniz Team participated in a cup stacking challenge using plastic cups, string and rubber bands. This challenge emphasized teamwork and collaboration.
